Why I biked 100 miles to the beach.

Assisting my son in navigating the uncharted waters of adulthood.

How did I get into Biking 100 miles to the Beach? After my first ride, I was hooked and it is the most amazing feeling crossing that finish line knowing that you made a difference. My personal journey: Assisting my son in navigating the uncharted waters of adulthood.
Back in 2002, 18 months after becoming a mom for the first time, my son Scott was diagnosed with autism. After a few months of experiencing every emotion, my focus shifted to educating myself, attending workshops, and exploring programs to enroll my son in. I become waiting room friends with many other moms of kids with autism. Since then, I have become extremely involved in the community and served as an advocate for all individuals with ASD.

In 2011, I founded RISE for Autism, and organization with a mission to provide community and professional awareness, family support and resources, financial assistance, and a lifetime continuum of therapeutic services to promote confident, competent individuals with Autism Spectrum and Related Disorders. Our vision is to bridge the gap from early interventions into adulthood. In 2023, we added our Adult Program and have become a vendor with DDA to provide services to local individuals over the age of 21. After 22 years, I found a way to support my son as he transitioned into adulthood.

I have discovered that it is feasible, even though it has been a significant undertaking. Especially with the assistance of friends, family, and community members who are committed to the establishment of a society in which autism is embraced and integrated into the fabric, as I believe it should be.

Donating to Bike to the Beach is a contribution to support the Local and National Autism and disABILITY community. RISE for Autism has been a community partner with Bike to the Beach for 12 years. Funds raised will assist in supporting our programs.
